Carbon Footprint Calculator

Meet Otto, your carbon advisor

Otto asks a few natural questions, estimates your footprint, and recommends exactly what to buy — with his reasoning shown, not hidden. Prefer a plain form? Use the quick calculator instead.

These are placeholder example projects for demonstration only — not real, purchasable carbon credits yet.
Otto isn't connected yet — this preview will go live once the backend is deployed. In the meantime, try the quick calculator.

How we calculate this

Every carbon credit on OpenCarbon represents one metric tonne of CO2-equivalent (tCO2e). We convert your answers into an estimated yearly footprint using rough public emission-factor averages, then divide by 1 tonne and round up so you're always covering at least your full estimate.

Activity Assumed factor
Short-haul flight ≈ 250 kg CO2e per flight
Long-haul flight ≈ 1,100 kg CO2e per flight
Car travel ≈ 0.17 kg CO2e per km (average petrol car)
Home heating 0–1,440 kg CO2e per year depending on source
Diet 1,500–3,300 kg CO2e per year depending on pattern

These are illustrative averages, not a certified footprint audit. For a real purchase decision, we'll eventually support uploading actual utility and travel data instead of estimates.
