How We Score Projects
Every project on OpenCarbon carries a Core Score out of 100. Here's exactly what goes into it — no black box.
What we start from
We don't invent scores from scratch. Rating carbon credits well is genuinely hard, specialist work, so our score begins from independent assessments that already exist: ICVCM Core Carbon Principles (CCP) labelling status, and ratings from agencies including Sylvera and BeZero where available.
What we add
- Permanence — how durable the carbon storage is, and what happens if it's reversed
- Leakage risk — whether the activity might just push emissions elsewhere
- Verification quality — how independent and recent the last audit was
- Community & biodiversity impact — co-benefits beyond carbon, and how well they're evidenced
What we show you
Every project page shows the score alongside its biggest open uncertainty, not just the number. A score is never edited silently: when it changes, we record why and when.
This methodology is a working draft while we onboard real projects — this page will be updated with our final weighting and data sources.
